FAQs

How much does it cost?

For Fellows, the cost is $500 to cover meals throughout the week, their housing, and the costs of activities, as well as speaker fees.

For Senior Fellows, the fee is $650 due to the additional couple of days before the full week of learning begins.

Is FSEC fun?

Sure is! We hope to create an experience that is fun and open to new ideas of fun for everyone. We stand by a policy to be inclusive to all individuals and provide a safe environment, while also providing as many opportunities for fun and learning as our time together allows. Most of the fun stems from the relationships and dynamics of the group, and often, will come out of free time playing cards or games together.

What should I expect to bring?

Sheets, blankets, pillows, meals, and access to laundry machines and showers will be available to students. If your student has any questions about what else is allowed to bring to the camp, please contact the supervisor, Jodi Maas.

With that being said, we recommend bringing the following:

  • Bath towel, fitted sheet, extra blanket

  • Clothes for activities (for 7 days), swimsuit

  • Detergent, dryer sheets (if you wish to do laundry while there)

  • A notebook & pens/pencils

  • Board games (if you have a favorite you’d like to bring to play during free time)

Are there scholarships to help with the cost?

Yes! In the registration, you can put at the bottom that you (or your student) are interested in applying for a camp scholarship. We have a prompt for them to answer. Otherwise, you can also contact FSEC supervisor Jodi Maas at jmaas@gustavus.edu.

What is your policy on phones?

We recognize that your life outside of camp is important, and we believe that young adults are capable of managing their screen time effectively. We try to aid this by offering recreation points for putting your phone away during lectures. As long as the student is respectful of the space and those presenting, phones are allowed.

Are there ways to be in leadership?

Yes! Students who have been at the camp previously have the opportunity to be a ‘senior fellow,’ which brings students to camp a few days before the other fellows arrive to spend time planning the week with mentors and leadership. This provides bonding opportunities and opportunities to develop leadership skills to help the camp community, as well as an opportunity to give an individual testimony during morning spark. If you are interested in being a senior fellow this year, please fill out the application in the form above. We also provide opportunities for regular fellows, such as being part of the band if they play an instrument or sing.

Investigating the Mississippi River & Why?

How much do you actually know about the Mississippi River? The Mississippi has existed long before humans walked this earth, yet we often barely scratch the surface of the waterway’s story. Between the Mississippi’s fascinating ecosystems, both ancient and modern, sacred indigenous American history and traditions, and the river’s utilization in facilitating colonialism, every chapter of the waterway’s history has something to teach us. Join us in our hands-on exploration of what the Mississippi can teach us about our own faith traditions and the world as we know it.
